Tips For Degreasing A Sewer Line

If you have a sewer line on your property that you are responsible for, you might be at a loss when you realize that its performance issues are due to a buildup of grease. You probably don't know how to access the sewer line to degrease it and you don't know how to get it working at full capacity again. Here are some tips for making sure that you are able to degrease your sewer line with the least amount of stress and pain possible.

1. Find a Larger Point of Access

Every drain in your house goes to your sewer line, but some are larger and therefore more effective than others. Hit up a basement toilet or shower for the largest access possible. You want to make sure that you are also relatively close to the sewer line, so prioritize downstairs bathrooms over upstairs bathrooms.

2. Use Enzyme Drain Cleaner

Enzyme drain cleaner can be purchased at a hardware store near you. There are many different manufacturers, so follow the instructions for diluting the cleaner with water. While you are mixing the drain cleaner, start running hot water down the drain. This will serve to loosen up the grease to make it slightly easier to remove. If you are using a shower, running hot water will do the trick. If you are using a toilet, collect hot water in a second bucket and pour it incrementally into the toilet after flushing it. This will essentially transfer bacteria to the grease in your drain. The bacteria will then begin to eat the grease, removing it from your sewer lines.

3. Rinse and Repeat

For the first 5 to 10 days, do this every day. See if your sewer lines are back to their full potential. If not, continue doing this process. If it doesn't work after two weeks, call a professional grease removal company. If it does work, perform this process once a month to keep your sewer line free of grease.

For more information, talk to a company, such as Tierra Environmental & Industrial Services, that specializes in grease removal. If you find that you often have this problem, consider having them install a grease trap that they could then empty and turn the grease into methane gas for energy purposes. The grease removal experts will do all they can to assess the situation and solve it quickly and efficiently.
